What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery is a cosmetic procedure for women who are unhappy with the size, shape, and symmetry of their breasts. For many women, how they feel about the appearance of their breasts can have a significant effect on how they feel about their overall appearance. Also referred at as a “breast aug” or “boob job”, types of breast augmentation techniques can transform a woman’s self-confidence as well as her silhouette. Scottsdale plastic surgeon, Dr. Joseph Berardi is a well-trained and experienced breast surgeon who has helped many achieve their ideal look and improve their self-esteem through breast enhancements and lifts.
Breast Implant Types
No two sets of breasts are identical, and as such, no two types of breast implants are exactly alike. Your breast augmentation treatment will begin with a comprehensive consultation during in which Dr. Berardi will explain all of your options for breast surgery, including the various types of advanced augmentation options, ideal breast size, and placement. Dr. Berardi offers both silicone and saline breast implants as well as fat transfer breast surgery.
The types of breast augmentation you choose is based on a number of unique factors, including your cosmetic goals, personal preferences, and Dr. Berardi’s professional recommendations.
Silicone Breast Impants
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel, which feels similar to one’s natural breast tissue. If you choose silicone implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly. Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women age 22 or older.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants consist of a saltwater solution, which is filled after the implant shell is placed. Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel, and are FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women age 18 or older.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
Fat transfer breast augmentation, also called fat grafting, essentially uses liposuction to take fat from other parts of your body and inject it into your breasts. This is a breast augmentation option for women who are looking for a relatively smaller increase in breast size and would prefer more natural looking results.
Are you an augmentation candidate?
Scottsdale breast implant candidates include women who are unhappy with the size, shape, symmetry or positioning of their breasts. Many women who are unhappy with sagging breasts following extreme weight loss or pregnancy and childbirth pursue breast augmentation in combination with a breast lift. You must be over the age of 18 and in good general health. In addition, you should not smoke. It is also important to have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of breast surgery. During your pre-surgery consultation, Dr. Berardi will evaluate your candidacy for breast augmentation surgery.
Breast Augmentation Procedure Process
The length of breast enlargement surgery varies depending on the type of augmentation you select, however, a procedure may typically last about 1.5 hours. After administering anesthesia, Dr. Berardi will carefully make surgical incisions, either underneath the breast, around the lower edge of the areola or within the armpit, for breast augmentation with implants. The placement of the incisions will be decided before surgery. Each type of incision is inconspicuous, leaving minimal scarring. After making the incisions, Dr. Berardi inserts the implant either above or below the pectoral muscle and finishes by closing the incisions.
For patient’s undergoing a fat transfer breast augmentation procedure, anesthesia is also administered at the start of the plastic surgery procedure. Fat is then taken from fatty parts of your body, meticulously washed and purified, and then carefully reinjected with specially designed needles into the breast region.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Various types of breast augmentation techniques are performed as an outpatient procedure, and you will be able to return home after treatment, though an overnight stay can be arranged if you wish. You should expect to experience soreness and swelling in the days after the procedure. Dr. Berardi will prescribe you medication to help you deal with any minor discomfort, and you will be able to return to work typically within one week. More strenuous activities such as lifting or exercising should be avoided until Dr. Berardi releases you. You may perform light exercise, not involving the chest muscles after two weeks. Heavier exercise and full activity may typically resume after 6 weeks. Although results from surgery are evident immediately, residual swelling may last for several weeks. The breasts should take their final shape and position within two to six months. Dr. Berardi and his staff will provide you with thorough post-operative instructions. They are available around the clock to address any questions or concerns. After recovery, patients find that they are more comfortable and confident with their new curves.
