Deep Plane Facelifts in Scottsdale & Phoenix

Deep plane faceliftFacial features are the very foundation of your unique appearance. Unfortunately, they are also the most delicate of our features and are susceptible to significant change over time due to things like sun damage, aging, lifestyle and even stress. When wrinkles begin to form on the face, or skin begins to sag, it can reveal your true age, or even worse, cause you to look older than you really are.

Deep plane facelift surgery is an intricate and comprehensive procedure which can help you regain the features of your youth. As an accomplished facial plastic surgeon in Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. Berardi has helped many men and women feel confident in their appearance through the facelift procedure. Am I a Candidate for Deep Plane Facelift Surgery?

The typical facelift candidate is an individual who is unhappy with signs of aging that have appeared on the face, including sagging skin of the cheeks and jawline and loss of volume. During a comprehensive consultation, Dr. Berardi will evaluate your bone structure as well as your skin elasticity to determine if you will respond well to treatment.

Other factors that will determine if you are a good facelift candidate include being in good general health and not smoking, as smoking can increase the risk of complications.

You should also have realistic expectations regarding facelift surgery, and understand that while the procedure can reverse already-existing signs of aging, it cannot stop the aging process altogether. Dr. Berardi will assess your cosmetic needs and goals, as well as your motivations for pursuing surgery, to determine if you are an ideal facelift candidate.

Mid Facelift Surgery Candidates

Mid facelift surgery is ideal for patients who are unhappy with the appearance of loose sagging skin or volume loss around their cheeks and eyes. To be a good candidate for a mid facelift, you should be in good health and have a desire to rejuvenate your cheeks and brows.

Dr. Berardi will evaluate these factors during a pre-surgery consultation. During the consultation he will also evaluate your overall health and cosmetic goals, and answer any questions you may have about treatment. It is important that you have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of surgery. While a mid facelift can reverse some signs of aging, it cannot stop the aging process from continuing.

At What Age Should You Consider a Facelift?

The question is whether a facelift is the right match to correct the facial aging you are seeing now, whatever your age. Most people who receive facelift surgery are in their 40s, 50s and 60s, but not all fall within that range. If you are concerned about the way aging has affected your face, ask Dr. Berardi if a facelift is right for you. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 66 percent of facelift patients in 2019 were age 55 or older, and 32 percent were age 40 to 54.

How is the Procedure Performed?

A deep plane facelift is a procedure which can enhance many features of the face and give you a more youthful, vibrant appearance by eliminating sagging skin.

Facelift surgery, which is performed under general anesthesia, begins with an incision within your hairline, follows along the front of the ear and then along the back of the ear. Dr. Berardi then lifts the skin to expose the underlying anatomy. Dr. Berardi will then remove and/or re-arranging underlying tissue while simultaneously lifting it to a higher position on the face. The excess skin that remains will then be removed. The procedure can sometimes be complemented by fat removal or soft tissue augmentation through liposuction surgery and/or nano fat grafting.

What Are The Different Facelift Techniques?

Rhytidectomy techniques offered by Dr. Berardi are:

  • Full facelift, which rejuvenates the lower two-thirds of the face.
  • Mid facelift, which addresses aging of the cheeks, brows and eyes. A mid facelift does not correct lower face sagging.

What is a Mid Facelift?

Dr. Berardi will plan the exact right surgical approach to achieve the rejuvenation you have in mind.

Dr. Berardi understands that each cosmetic surgery patient’s needs are unique, and is pleased to offer the mid-facelift procedure to patients who are unhappy with changes around their cheeks, brows, and eyes, but are not concerned with lower parts of the face, which can be addressed with a facelift. How is a Mid Facelift Performed?

Mid facelift surgery is a unique facial plastic surgery that specifically targets loose, sagging skin around the cheeks, eyes, and brow. This treatment may be combined with other facial procedures, such as a facelift, blepharoplasty or brow lift. Mid facelift surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

Dr. Berardi will make a series of incisions within the hair of the scalp as well as within the mouth, through which he will access the mid face and tissues near the cheeks. Dr. Berardi will place sutures through these incisions enabling him to lift the tissue into a higher more youthful position. The incisions are then closed with sutures and staples, and

How Long Does Deep Plane Facelift Surgery Take?

It depends on the exact procedure and what is being completed. Generally, most facelift procedures last several hours. We provide a time estimate after you’ve discussed the right facelift technique for your goals.

Can a Deep Plane Facelift be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes, a facelift can often be combined with other procedures. These facial surgeries enhance and complement the results of a facelift:

Rhytidectomy does not address wrinkles on the forehead or sagging eyelids. Unless neck lifting is included in the facelift, the procedure does not address neck wrinkles and neck banding. To get the most natural, consistent results, Dr. Berardi may recommend a complementary procedure.

How to Prepare for a Facelift or Mid Facelift

We provide thorough pre-surgery instructions once you’ve decided to schedule a facelift procedure with Dr. Berardi. Those instructions include:

  • Stay hydrated and limit alcohol consumption in the weeks prior. Doing so will keep your body and immune system healthy and strong.
  • If you smoke, you must completely quit at least 6 weeks prior to surgery.
Get your home ready for the recovery after surgery. Prep a relaxing area with blankets, books and entertainment. Get any errands, chores or to-do list items completed so you won’t need to worry about them while you recover.
  • Stop taking Advil or any type of NSAID at the time designated by our team.
  • Stop eating at the time we designate, the night before surgery.
  • Arrange to have someone bring you to the appointment, drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours.
  • Wear a loose top to the surgical appointment. Something that is comfortable is recommended. Avoid wearing a top that is difficult to pull over your head – this area will be bandaged and sensitive after your appointment.

Don’t worry – we will make sure you feel ready for your surgery. We care about our patients’ experiences, and arm them with the information they need and deserve.

How Long Will Results Last After Facelift Surgery?

Most people continue to enjoy their deep plane facelift results for roughly 10 years or longer. There is no predetermined time at which your face returns to sagging.  Each person’s skin quality, genetics and lifestyle will influence how long the results last. Even after 10 years, your face will likely look younger than it would have otherwise, even if some sagging appears.

Deep Plane Facelift Surgery Recovery

Deep Plane facelift surgery is an in-depth procedure which requires rest and relaxation afterward. You should expect to experience swelling, bruising and mild discomfort in the days after surgery. Dr. Berardi will provide you with complete post-operative instructions and pain medication to ensure that your recovery is as safe and comfortable as possible.<

Following a deep plane facelift procedure, you should:

  • Keep your head elevated and neck in a neutral position as much as possible
  • Use ice packs to reduce swelling and ease any pain
  • Rest for the first few days after surgery

Dr. Berardi will see you for a post-surgical appointment at our Scottsdale office to monitor your recovery, and will advise you on when you can return to work and other routine activities. Strenuous activity — contact sports, in particular — should be avoided for six weeks after surgery.

Full results from surgery are typically evident about one month after your surgery. After the recovery period is over, patients often report an increased sense of self-confidence thanks to the restoration of their more youthful, attractive facial features.

Mid Facelift Recovery

Mid facelift is a less extensive procedure than a traditional facelift and will require less recovery time, although substantial rest is still needed after surgery. You should expect to experience some swelling and minor discomfort in the days after surgery, both of which can be controlled by medication prescribed by Dr. Berardi. You will be instructed to keep the head elevated and ice your face to control swelling.

Many mid facelift patients in Scottsdale are able to return to work within 10 days or less. Dr. Berardi will closely monitor your recovery and advise you about resuming other, more strenuous activities and exercise. Should any questions or concerns arise during your recovery period, Dr. Berardi and his staff are available around the clock.

What Are The Risks of Facelift Surgery?

Like all surgery, facelifts carry the risk of complications. We provide you with a complete list of the risks at the time of your consultation. You and Dr. Berardi will go over it to make sure you are properly informed. In general, risks may include:

  • Anesthesia complications
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Numbness
  • Poor wound healing

Dr. Berardi will make sure you know what to do to reduce the risks, such as quitting smoking and following all aftercare instructions. After reviewing your health history, Dr. Berardi will be able to determine whether you are at a higher risk of any complications. Complications from Dr. Berardi’s facelift procedure are uncommon.
