Even if you’ve already changed your diet and spent more time at the gym, you may still be unhappy with the appearance of your midsection. The abdominal area is a common part on the body that is often unaffected even with alterations in nutrition and activity levels, and can be problematic for both men and women. Dr. Joseph C. Berardi is a board-certified plastic surgeon that offers surgical procedures that can improve the belly area and help patients achieve a flatter, tighter tummy. But which treatment will you need? Many patients are unsure which one to pick: liposuction or a tummy tuck?

Understanding body contouring procedures

To best decide which type of surgery is appropriate to assist you in reaching your goals, you must first understand how each of these treatments work.

  • Liposuction – liposuction is the manual removal of stubborn pockets of fat that tend to accumulate on target areas of the body. Liposuction is geared towards removing the fat by suctioning it out permanently.
  • Tummy tuck – the tummy tuck procedure is actually a combination of liposuction and excess skin removal. It is most appropriate for patients who have stretched muscles, skin, or abdominal walls. Liposuction alone for these patients would result in sagging, relaxed, and drooping skin in the abdominal area and would leave patients unhappy with their final look.

Also, due to the natural of the tummy tuck procedure, patients will have significant scarring from there excess skin was removed and the area was stitched back. However, this scar will be placed lower on the stomach area where it is often well-disguised with underwear or bikini swimsuits.
